Hello

I’m Katie Malinsky, the founder of Hygge Academy, and my passion for creating a nurturing, creative, and sustainable childcare environment stems from both my professional background and personal experiences.

I hold a degree in Human Development and Family Studies, with a focus on Child Development, which has given me a deep understanding of the unique needs of young children. Over the years, I’ve worked in various childcare settings, from being a daycare teacher in infant and toddler rooms, to working as a nanny, camp counselor, and afterschool program leader. I’m also a proud mother of two young children, aged 2 and 4, which has further fueled my drive to create the ideal learning space for kids.

Our Story

In October 2023, my husband and I were both unexpectedly laid off within the same week. Our largest expense at the time was childcare, and although we considered pulling our children out of daycare, we realized that doing so would mean losing their spots—leading to a 6-8 month waitlist to get them back in when we returned to work. This frustrating experience reminded me of when we first moved to Wisconsin in 2022 and struggled to find reliable childcare. Waitlists for daycare centers were long, and other options were either too expensive, unreliable, or were simply not places we would feel comfortable sending our kids.

During my three months of unemployment, I set out to find a better solution—and that’s how Hygge Academy was born. Inspired by my Norwegian heritage and the Scandinavian philosophy of Hygge (a concept that emphasizes comfort, simplicity, and well-being), I wanted to create a daycare that feels like a second home, blending a cozy, aesthetically pleasing environment with opportunities for active play and calm, mindful moments.

We were also overwhelmed with conflicting information about the products our children use every day—so many of which are filled with toxins, from food to tableware, toys, and even diapers. Frustrated with the lack of quality options, I became determined to provide a safe, sustainable environment for my own children and others. At Hygge Academy, we carefully select non-toxic, eco-friendly toys, tableware, and supplies, and focus on high-quality, natural materials. I believe that less is more, and research supports that when children are surrounded by too many toys or distractions, they can become overwhelmed. By offering a minimalist space with thoughtfully chosen items, we give children the chance to play freely and think creatively.

Our goal at Hygge Academy is to support children's development through a holistic approach—nurturing their imagination, fostering life skills, and giving them the space to explore both indoors and outdoors. We believe children thrive when they feel comfortable and connected to their environment, which is why we are dedicated to creating a warm, peaceful space where they can grow and learn.
